The Most Dangerous Game (FINISHED!)

Post by Coded_One » Sat Apr 24, 2010 1:08 am

THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME
or The Tale of 2 Men, 18 Snipers, and the Largest Frozen Synapse Map Ever.

(Video and game number at bottom of post under THE RESULTS: section)

THE STORY:
Deep within the wonderful digital bowels of IRC, a discovery was made:

Code: Select all

Coded_One: WOAH...
Coded_One: Urufu, load the level called 9cityblocks.enc
Urufu: Mmmk, it's loading...
Urufu: WOAH...
There it was in all its sweet delicious glory. It was like discovering the lost city of gold. 9cityblocks.enc is (to my knowledge) the largest playable map in the game. It even has two sister maps: 9cityblocks2 and 9cityblocks3. Both are equally large, all are equally impressive. We decided on the first 9cityblocks because it's more open. This is the perfect arena for a grand sniper duel; the buildings have many entrances, and even more windows. The ground outside is littered with boxes for the sneaky bastards pleasure. The pathfinding itself can't even handle this level, and frequent crashes occur. It was beautiful, and we were going to have a sniper duel to test it out.
THE RULES:
We both were to start off with 9 snipers each. There is a 50 turn limit, and we are playing in the dark.
THE PICTURES:
Here is the link to the starting positions of our snipers. I dare not put it in image tags, as it's quite large.

When the game is finished I shall post the Youtube video and the replay link. Me and Urufu are even considering writing a turn by turn analysis when it's all said and done.
So far, it's been quite an experience. Many of the first glimpses of the enemy occur outside of the sniper's range. The planning is a long and arduous process, but it's simply fun to enjoy the scale of it all. If you have a willing friend, I totally recommend playing this map.

If a mod wouldn't mind it, would it be OK to post this in the tournament section as well?

THE RESULTS:
Updates will be posted as they occur.
Turn 5: All snipers are still moving into position. No glimpses of the enemy. 0 casualties.
Turn 10: Contact has been made on several fronts. Coded_One has lost 1 unit while Urufu has lost 2.
Turn 15: We pretty much know the full whereabouts of each others units. Since the last update, I have lost 3 more units and Urufu has lost 2, leaving us both with only 5 units left.
Turn 20: Urufu has 2 units left, Coded_One has 5.
Turn 24: And it's all over! Coded_One won with 9 kills and 5 losses with a score of 90.

The game number is -92269, and here is the Youtube link in glorious 720p HD:

This is like playing chess with 1000 squares.

Oh geez, good luck with that. 50 turns might have been enough if you weren't playing with just snipers. With their walking speed and aiming time you'll have a hard time making it to 50, I think.

I love it! Next time I think it might be an idea to have a mix of units though..

Nice write-up, I think I wouldn't have the patience to play it like that tho, I would prefer 9 shotty's and maybe some RL's to blow things to pieces more quickly and less elegant.

If there was a tournament for this, I would join it. o_o

I think 7 snipers, one shotgunner, and 1 machine gunner might make it more interesting though.

Can you add zones or hostages in the map editor? Would make a neat pseudo escort mission.

BUMP!

Well, turn 10 has passed and you can read the update in the first post. Sorry for the HUGE delay, but Urufu has been ridiculous, so blame him.

Needless to say, updates should come more frequently.

I'm the most rediculus but this should be resolved by this weekend because im terrible and making time to arduously plot out my turn, only to realize that i have fallen into Coded_One's traps perfectly!

Be sure to post the game number when it's done so we can watch the mammoth replay.

Although in my opinion you guys really should have thrown in some non-sniper units to add some depth. Gonna be a little stalematey, methinks.

Hate to keep BUMPing, but there is another update on the top post. We are planning to finish the game today, so we'll post the game number and Youtube video when we're done.

In the meantime, do you want me to keep posting with every new update? Or leave the thread alone till we're finished?

An update every five turns works for me. Can't wait to see the YouTube vid.

By the way, did you have any issues with pathing? I tried loading another citymap and force Blindsight in revenge match for all the times he blindchallenged me to play Hostage, but trying to move my units results in a mess of randomly placed waypoints all over the map.
