Post by Omroth » Wed May 05, 2010 9:20 am

Hey guys.

We're experimenting with some new fonts, and want to know what peoples' opinions on this for the majority of the text is:

This is the previous, for comparison:

I prefer the old font - I think. Hard to check from work. Would be great to post a "Option 1" vs "Option 2" screenshot. :)

I kinda like the font, but I think it's difficult to read. It kinda reminds me of the fonts I used to muck about with over a decade ago, trying to get my terminal to look like a computer from the 1980s. This isn't necessarily a good thing :)

Also, that game creation box looks like ass, but I'm sure you're aware of that :)

I like it, it's more fitting with the style. But I think there are better fonts with a similar style to it. That one is a bit tough to read. It might be the spacing, not sure.

I agree, the style of the font is good but this particular one is too hard to read

Old font is easier, new font is cooler. IMO, the trouble with new font is entirely in the e's and a's.

I like the style of it, but it's not as easy to read as the original one.

I agree with the others. New font is the right style, but it's a bit hard to read. However, it's cool that you're looking for a better font, and I think it'll really tie the UI and tone of the game together. Hopefully, the new font will also be used in the (currently) ugly orders menu?

I agree - I prefer the look, but find the old style much easier to read (therefore voted for old style).

The button font for the first screen seems more appropriate for the 2nd and vice versa.

I like the new font, but it kinda breaks down a bit in paragraph text (hard to read).

I also prefer the old font. Much easier on the eye.

Like everybody else, I like the new style but it's too hard to read, so this particular new font isn't right IMO.

Thanks guys. For now, we'll be keeping Arial for most text, but using that font for buttons and headers - this seems to work ok.

This is exactly right. I like the idea of the new font but this particular one is hard on the eyes.

Yes, you'll definitely want a sans serif font for the body text on the menus and displays in Frozen Synapse, but Orbital was just too strong in terms of geometric design. Makes it hard to read. Orbital is a great font, but mainly for headers, buttons, and other things that you don't have to read for any extended time.

Eventually, however, Ariel will have to go -- there are plenty of "futuristic" fonts which aren't quite as radically geometric as the one you have here. Something with just a little more hint of the angular about it would be just fine.
