August Rebalance Patch Steam Beta

Post by Jimmeh » Thu Aug 14, 2014 4:19 pm

Hey guys.

The new patch is now available as a Steam beta for Windows, OS X and Linux – here are the instructions on how to access it:
  • Right click on Frozen Endzone in your Game Library and click on Properties
  • Click on the ‘Betas’ tab, enter the password (thetestserver) in to the text field provided and click on ‘Check Code'
  • Select the ‘staging’ beta from the drop down list and click on ‘Close’
  • After a few moments an update will start to download, or you can restart Steam to force it to download
  • If you don't already have an account on the staging server you can use the reusable cd-key ‘steamBeta’ to register a new one
Please get it and play as much as possible - there are some pretty big balance and mechanic changes in here, and I'd like to see how they're working.

Changelog
  • More player deploy positions; players start further from the ball
  • On a running turn, the turn will end when the ball carrier runs out of plans immediately, rather than waiting 3.5 seconds.
  • Loads of bugs to do with chasing in a previous turn have been fixed
  • Burst replaced with Throw Speed (time to release ball)
  • General multiplayer full match stats balance - lots of costs changed
  • Chase system improved and modified - lots of bug fixes and you will now not chase if explicitly waiting on a waypoint. You will never chase a throwing enemy.
  • Loads of improvements to the SP AI.
  • Turnover player invincibility time increased from 450 ms to 700ms.
  • Load/save file dialog is now better in some ways, but worse in others.
  • Int radii being flashed up eroneously at end of turnover turn
  • Safe indicator was saying safe when a waypoint was not safe
  • Trim search terms in search window
  • Fixed "skirmish with team" functionality.
  • Different loading screen backgrounds for all stadiums
  • You can now watch any play from any play from the game menu.
  • Player names are no longer blank in MP commentary
  • Punt IMs not used in Duplicate games.
  • Obscure Timed Turns bug that noone noticed has been fixed.
  • As a stop-gap, the throw arrow is rendered on a mid-air turn break turn to make the ball easier to find. We're working on a better solution.
  • For better or worse, the "dont run behind line" visual indicator now displays at the right times.
  • <A shadow bug has been introduced on some levels - this will be fixed before the full patch release next week>

When we update to this, does it overwrite our current Frozen Cortex game or does the current non-beta stick around?

You can certainly run the Steam version independently of a non-Steam version if you bought it directly.

I'm torn between wanting to help test and wanting to do tournament matches. :D

I bought the game long time ago, I don't use steam. But I see no change in custom stats. Should I use steam to have the update ?

Anyway I just installed steam and the game again in other folder, I did the steps, I launched the game, but now my password is not recognized in login section. What's going on here ?

Hey wonderhero - you require a new username and password for the updated version because it runs on a different server. Think you can just create a new account using Jimmeh's instructions above

Not sure where to report these but I'll use this thread for now. Two immediate bugs I've seen:

1) There is still a placeholder for "Burst" when in-game. It's shows up as fully depleted for all bots.

2) In the team editor, if I click to reduce resilience I can click it 3 times even though it only shows up as having two setting (-25 and -50). So if I click it twice it shows full negative (-50) but then I can click it again and get more power credit, even though nothing changes on the energy bar.

Just double checked, to verify this: if you load up the beta through Steam, you can roll back to the public build by clicking properties -> Betas and using the drop-down box to select "None". It'll require a small (~20MB) DL and install, but you can get back to your tourney games that way, at least until they push the patch through to the public build.

If you're lazy and don't want to switch between them, after downloading the beta you can copy the whole Steam\steamapps\common\Frozen Endzone folder (~1.7 GB) somewhere else, roll back to normal FC on Steam, and play both at the same time (even literally, if you want). The beta doesn't need to be launched from Steam.

Look at you, hacker.

(This actually seems like an awesome tip, I just wanted an excuse to say that.)
