Account creation - "Username must be less than characters"

Account creation seems impossible for me, as no matter what length username I submit, I get the error "Your username must be less than characters long" (see attached).

I'm using Steam under linux (official steam .deb, using frozen cortex version that is up-to-date at time of writing). Any help appreciated.
